About One Tree Point School
Our Pùrakau
One Tree Point School is a Year 1- 6 school with approximately 250 students, situated 40 Km south of Whangārei on a wonderful site just across the road from the harbour.
The land on which our school is situated is called ‘Te Ara Kāhika’ or ‘Pathway of Chiefs’. In previous times this is the route that Ngā puhi chiefs took on their journey south. It is important for us that we acknowledge and value the language and stories of our local iwi, Patuharakeke and so we incorporate the name ‘Te Ara Kāhika’ alongside ‘One Tree Point School’
In Maori culture whales are synonymous with chiefs, and the names of the three teams within our school are named after the whales that traditionally swim in our harbour: Hakura is the smallest whale and the name of our year 0-2 team, Paikea is the humpbacked whale and the name of our year 3-4 team and Parāoa is the spermwhale and the name of our year 5-6 team.
Our Vision and Values
Empowering Learners who C.A.R.E.

Ma Te Mahi Ka Ora
From hard work comes success
Empowered learners are motivated, engaged and have confidence in their abilities; they have opportunities to make decisions that make a difference in their lives and in the lives of others.
Our school vision was developed through consultation across our community:
We aim to develop empowered learners who are motivated, engaged and have confidence in their abilities; they have opportunities to make decisions that make a difference in their lives and in the lives of others.
Our C.A.R.E. values ensure we focus on the whole child and develop caring and compassionate future citizens. They form the foundation of our school culture and are embedded in everything we do.
The artwork for our values incorporates key elements from our school logo which reflect our local environment. These elements have been selected to align with each value. Each of our teams has the name of a whale and the whale tale in the logo signifies our learners and the values we aim to develop as they travel through our school - Te Ara Kahika - the chiefs pathway.

Our Commitment
One Tree Point has a staff of talented teachers and support staff who are committed to ensuring our children are equipped with the habits, skills and knowledge they need to thrive today and in their future. We work collaboratively as a team to develop our learners to be thinkers who are curious about the world and actively engaged in their learning. Our vision and values form the foundation of our curriculum.
We believe that in order to achieve our vision of ‘Empowering Learners who CARE’, we need to work in partnership with whanau, parents and caregivers and encourage you to speak to your child’s teacher about how you can be involved. We enjoy the support of a friendly community and committed Parent Teacher Association (PTA) who work hard to raise much needed funds that provide additional learning resources
We are a well-resourced school with excellent facilities.
As a consequence, we all enjoy being part of a school with a wonderful culture. Children love being here, working alongside one another, as do our staff. The respect shown by all members of our school to one another has developed a sense of partnership and purpose.
Come and join us!
It's fantastic teaching and learning in such a cool school on the Northland East coast but someone has to do it!
Introducing Tū ARIKI and our Learning Powers
Tū Ariki is the name of our whale mascot and he helps children build their learning powers by growing the skills to be Curious, Creative, Collaborative, Citizens.
Tū Ariki also helps us to learn our CARE values - as good citizens. The design on his tail is a link to our school CARE values and demonstrates that "without the tail the head can go nowhere" - we are directed and guided by our CARE values in our learning journey.
Tū - to rise upwards/become visible
Ariki - Ariki is a chief of high status and denotes leadership. An ariki is primarily concerned with the prosperity and mana of the people, the land (including the physical environment, harbour, waterways, and mountains).
An ariki also ensures the sacred cultural taonga of local iwi are protected and treasured - (for example Te Reo Maori, Tikanga, Waiata, Oral tradition, Whakapapa. An ariki is protective of any outside threats to the growth of the people. In the past an ariki was of chiefly descent and was the birthright of the first-born.
For the purpose of our new mascot, he would be the first to represent the mana and thereby growth of our learners, school and community.
curious
pākiki
Curiosity is the desire to learn. It is an eagerness to explore, discover and figure things out.
Tū Ariki is going to help us remember to notice, wonder and ask and to think deeply about everything we are learning.
Creative
auahatanga
Creativity is the ability to see or think about something in a new way, to see and solve problems no one else may know exists, and to engage in experiences that are new, unique, or different.
Tū Ariki will help us grow our skills and express our ideas and to explore, create and innovate.
Collaborative
Mahi Tahi
Collaboration is when people work with each other to complete a task. It involves co-operation and teamwork and the sharing of ideas, knowledge and skills to reach the same goal.
Tū Ariki will help us to learn how to communicate and grow our ability to share our thinking and really listen and consider the ideas of others.
Citizens
Kiriarau
Citizenship means being a member of and supporting one's community and country.
To be a good citizen we need to CARE about and look after ourselves, others and the environment.
At OTP Tū Ariki will remind us of our CARE values and help us learn how to be good citizens.
