Kia ora ē te whānau,
We are certainly enjoying this beautiful, sunny stretch of settled autumn weather at the moment. As we move toward the end of term, teachers are busy carrying out assessments, tracking progress, and preparing student reports, so the long weekend will be a very welcome opportunity for everyone to rest and recharge. We hope all of our tamariki, whānau, and friends have a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable long weekend together.
Reporting to Parents
As part of the ongoing rollout of the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum, schools across New Zealand are required to move to a new way of reporting student progress. This includes new year-level learning expectations and new progress descriptors — Emerging, Developing, Consolidating, Proficient, and Exceeding. We are using the new reporting format for the first time at the end of this term.

It is important for families to understand that the expectations for achievement in reading, writing, and mathematics, are now significantly higher than previously, which may mean some children appear to be achieving at a lower level than in the past. This does not mean children have gone backwards, but rather that the expectations for achieving at the expected level have changed. A more detailed email explaining these changes and what they mean for your child’s report will be sent to families shortly.

Winter Sports

A huge thank you to Whaea Lianne for all of her hard work organising our Bream Bay Zone Winter Sports Competition, which will be held at OTP on Wednesday 3rd June. Whānau are warmly invited to come along and support their tamariki throughout the day.

This is a non-competitive event designed to encourage tamariki to enjoy participating in and experiencing a range of winter sports, including hockey, netball, soccer, and rippa rugby. It promises to be a fun-filled day focused on teamwork, participation, and giving things a go.

Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day was a huge success this year, with a record turnout from grandparents and other special people in our students’ lives. We absolutely loved welcoming everyone to school on Friday and the feedback from the day was incredibly positive.

Visitors enjoyed spending time in classrooms, sharing activities, and seeing learning in action while connecting with students and staff. A highlight of the morning was the very special morning tea prepared by our Garden to Table group, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the day such a memorable and special occasion for our school community.

Literacy Week

I'd like to express my sincere thanks to Whaea Kylie for all her hard work organising our literacy week and Scholastic Book fair last week - it was absolutely amazing! We loved celebrating all things literacy across the school. On Wednesday, students worked in their house groups and rotated through a range of engaging literacy activities throughout the day.

Our tamariki took part in literacy rotations filled with creativity, fun, and learning. It was wonderful to see beautiful tuakana-teina in action, with older students supporting and encouraging younger students throughout the activities.

Students retold The Very Hungry Caterpillar, read local author Catherine Foreman’s The Cat’s Pyjamas and designed their own pyjamas for paper cats, made magical wands, and took part in a literary scavenger hunt around the school.

To top it all off, everyone came dressed as book characters, and the costumes were incredibly impressive! Thank you to our whānau for all the effort and support that went into the day. It truly was a magical celebration of reading and the joy that books bring.

Scholastic Book Fair
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Raewyn and Briar for their hard work in our Scholastic Book Fair all of last week, Thanks also to everyone who came along and supported the fair - the school receives a generaous percentage of books sold and these funds go to towards more books for our library.

Matariki

Although it is still some time away, we wanted to give our whānau an early heads up that school will be closing early at 12:00pm on Thursday 2nd July as we prepare to host our Matariki celebration. We know how quickly time flies in a busy school term, and this is shaping up to be a very exciting community event for our kura.

The afternoon will showcase the creativity and talents of our tamariki through a special art exhibition, alongside kapa haka rōpū from across Bream Bay performing together in celebration of Matariki.

We will send more details as we have them,  but in the meantime please consider how you may be able to help. We will be looking for support with the hāngi and other kai stalls, organising seating, helping with parking on the day, and supporting classes with preparations. Many hands make light work, and we would love our community to be part of making this a memorable celebration for everyone.

Ngā mihi nui
